Bone fractures in the thumb can be prevented by the following three tips:

  • Building strong bones: It is important to eat healthy, take sufficient calcium and swallow vitamin D. Getting enoug daily movement, like a half hour of walking, also contributes. Quiting smoking is also a good idea to improve bone strength.
  • Prevent falling: most fractures are caused by a fall or an unnatural extension or movement of the thumb. The following factors can counteract this: wearing sturdy shoes, watch out for obstructing objects, provide sufficient living space, make sure you can see clear, install handles in your bathroom. install handrails and avoid slippery surfaces.
  • Protective clothing: use protective clothing for sporting activities and, if necessary, wear protectors for risky activities such as skating or snowboarding.

Protective or preventative products are also products that can counter this problem. We, at Podobrace, can offer you a lot of products that can help you with prevention. Such as the Novamed Thumb Support with Flexible Splints and the Novamed Thumb Support / Wrist Splint.
