Joint capsule problems can be the result of acute injury and chronic injury. For example, acute injury occurs when you close the door while your thumb is in between it, or a ball hits your thumb. Chronic injury is caused by repeated stretching of the thumb, resulting in joint wear and long-term pain complaints or functional limitations. The thumb joint that is affected is also called the MCP-I joint. This joint consists of different capsules and ligaments. If the ligament tears off, there's a rupture.

Complaints and Symptoms

  • Painful pressure on the inside of the thumb
  • Swelling in the joint

It will recover by itself, if it doesn't or if it's too damaged, you can consider the following possibilities:

  • Physiotherapy or hand therapy
  • Immobilization by means of a splint or a plaster cast for 3 to 4 weeks
  • Surgery
  • A brace or one of our other products that stop this problem
