A shoulder injury is very common. The shoulder is the most mobile part of the human body. Therefore, it is especially prone to complaints and injuries. Are you curious to learn more, such as its causes and treatment? Then feel free to read on. We will be happy to explain.

How is a shoulder injury caused?

The shoulder joint is a complex joint composed of several joints. Moreover, several ligaments, tendons and muscles come together in the shoulder. Shoulder problems can occur suddenly or gradually. The underlying cause of the symptoms is not always clear. The most common causes of shoulder injuries are:

  • Overuse
  • Incorrect use of the shoulder
  • An accident
  • Stress
  • Wear/arthrosis due to age

Treatment

If even minimal movements cause pain, it is important to give the shoulder enough rest for a few days. However, it is important to keep moving at all times. Light movement keeps the joint supple and prevents the shoulder from getting stuck. So try to carry on with daily activities, but avoid heavy strain. Wearing a shoulder brace can provide support. If the pain lasts longer or is too severe, we advise you to contact your GP or physiotherapist. This way, a better diagnosis can be made.

Preventing a shoulder injury

There are a number of things you can do to prevent shoulder injury. If the symptoms occur after sports, it is important to do a proper warm-up. This is especially important in sports like swimming, volleyball, tennis and other similar sports where the arms and shoulders are used a lot.

If you experience symptoms during work or daily activities, it is wise to take a critical look at the movements you make. You may be using the shoulder muscles in the wrong way, putting strain on the shoulder joint. This can cause symptoms. Furthermore, it is important to keep the shoulder supple, give it enough rest and adopt a good sitting posture. This way you can prevent shoulder complaints.
