What are the symptoms of calf pain?

Calf pain can usually be recognised by a thick, warm and red calf. You may feel tingling in the calf. On the other hand, it is also possible that you feel very little sensation. The pain can come on suddenly, or it can also occur gradually. Some people feel pain while moving, others when they are not moving at all.

The most common calf injuries

It is common for a calf injury to be the cause when you suffer from calf pain. We briefly explain the most common injuries below.

1. Achilles tendon injury

The Achilles tendon is a tendon of the calf muscle. An injury can occur as a result of overstretching the Achilles tendon. This overstretching occurs when the calf muscle is too short. A calf muscle is too short when your foot sags too much inwards or outwards during loading. This causes pain in the calf. This injury is most common in athletes.

2. Whiplash

Whiplash is the most common calf injury. In whiplash, part of the calf muscle is torn. When this happens, you experience a lot of pain and will struggle to continue walking. Tightening the calf muscle is almost impossible. With this injury, it is important to stop your activity as soon as possible. Next, sufficient rest is important.

3. Sprained calf muscle

In a sprained calf muscle, the calf muscle has sustained damage. This damage is less severe than whiplash. With a sprained calf muscle, you will mainly feel pain in the entire calf muscle and especially during exercise. Taking sufficient rest is also important with this injury.

4. Cramp in the calf

Cramp in the calf usually occurs during or after exercise. The symptoms can occur if your calf muscles overstretch while running or because you have too little fluid in your body. Overuse and lack of fluid can cause cramping in your calf.

Treating calf pain

With calf pain, it is important to get enough rest. The period of rest is different for each injury. It is therefore wise to visit the physiotherapist first. After a few weeks, you can resume sports. Wearing a calf brace can provide support and extra strength. Wearing a brace is both a solution and prevention to get or keep the calf in good condition.
