General information

In the case of a torn ankle ligament, the foot has been considerably tilted, causing the ligaments to tear. Usually, this causes swelling on and under the ankle. It is often accompanied by a bruising on the out or inside of the ankle.

Symptoms

A partial tear hurts a lot, while a fully torn ligament doesn't have to hurt directly. Usually, a bruising or swelling occurs around the ankle which becomes visible by a discoloration. Depending on the seriousness of the tear, this discoloration and bruising can stretch out to the edge of your foot. This discoloration usually occurs after 24 to 48 hours.

Causes

The most common cause is a bad misstep or fall. This usually happens on rough and unequal surface, sportsfields, crooked tiles and so on. It usually involves uncontrolled movements, for example, during sports.

Treatment

A torn ankle ligament can heal within six weeks. The first period can be reasonably painful, this usually disappears within a couple of weeks. It can take several months for the swelling to disappear. In order to make the ligaments heal correctly, tape is usually applied. If, after a couple of hours after spraining your ankle, you suspect that it is broken, it is very important to go visit a doctor. A fracture can be recognized by the following symptoms. Swift swelling, a crackling noise and not being able to put any weight on the ankle. If it is fractured, your ankle will usually be placed in a plaster cast and in the most severe cases, some surgeons will perform surgery. In order to rehabilitate properly, you have to wear a brace to help with the support and protection of your ankle like the Gladiator Lightweight Ankle Support with Straps and the Morsa ThermoCY Lightweight Ankle Football Support.
