General information

Bones can break. In most cases, a broken ankle is the result of a fall or an accident. You'll instantly feel severe pain and your ankle will swell up instantly. The ankle is formed by the fibula, tibia and the talus. With an ankle fracture, a breaking occurs in one or more bones of the ankle. In the most severe cases, several bones will break simultaneously. A broken ankle can occur after you sprain your ankle or when you're tackled on a football field, for example. The patient usually hears and / or feels the ankle breaking instantly.

Complaints and symptoms

  • A pressuring pain on the bone
  • Moving the ankle is experienced as painful
  • The ankle is swollen
  • Severe pain in and / or around the ankle
  • Usually you can not stand or walk or put any form of pressure on the ankle

Treatment and recovery

In order to let the ankle heal, fractures are fixed and the bones are set, so they can heal and grow back together again. After that, your ankle will be placed in a plaster cast for 4 to 6 weeks. In the more severe cases, the patient will have to undergo surgery. During the surgery, the broken bones are replaced in their natural position and fixed with plates and screws. After the surgery, there is a period of 6 weeks in which the leg can and may not be loaded. Under the supervision of a physiotherapist, the resilience can slowly be built up again. The overall rehabilitation can very well take up to a year. However, this depends on the fracture, the amount of weeks your ankle is placed in a cast and the natural condition and functioning of the patient. To improve the rehabilitation or to prevent an ankle fracture you might consider wearing an ankle support. We have, for example, the Bauerfeind AirLoc Ankle Support and the Gladiator Lightweight Ankle Support with Straps to help you.
