What are chilblains?

Chilblain means that you have to deal with bruises, red swellings and/or hematomas on the feet due to the cold. This is why it is also called winter feet. These annoying swellings can be painful and also very itchy.

It also happens that these swellings occur on the toes or hands. These are then also called chilblains or winter hands. The swellings are also painful and itchy for chilblains and winter hands.

How does it originate?

Chilblains are caused by the fact that cold can constrict the blood vessels and thus reduce blood flow in these limbs. As a result, there is less heat supply and your feet feel cold. As the blood vessels are temporarily constricted by the cold, the blood accumulates and causes bruising and redness. These are the spots that eventually cause those unpleasant symptoms.

Chilblains not only occur on the feet, toes, hands and fingers. This ailment can also occur in the ears, lower legs and nose.

What can you do against chilblains?
