Pain in the knee when bending and climbing stairs
Pain in the knee when climbing stairs or bending over is common. There are many reasons for this. In this blog we look at these causes and give you tips on how to alleviate the pain and spare your knee.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
This is an autoimmune disease that affects the joints. This causes inflammation of the joints. An autoimmune disease means that your immune system turns against your own body. The course of the disease is variable. The inflammations can cause you a lot of trouble for a while, and then there can be a period in which it is calmer. The condition can occur at any age and is more common in women than in men.
Patellofemoral pain syndrome
Whenever pain occurs around the knee (patella), this is referred to as patellofemoral pain syndrome. This pain often occurs on exertion, such as walking, running, cycling and climbing stairs. The pain syndrome is common in teenagers and children. It often occurs after the growth spurt. However, incorrect footwear, weak muscles in the upper legs and buttocks and an incorrect position of the feet can also be a cause of this syndrome.
Gout
Gout is a form of rheumatism in which inflammation occurs in your body. This is caused by an excessively high uric acid level. Uric acid is a normal waste product of your body. But when you have gout, your metabolism changes and the uric acid can accumulate in other places in your body. This causes inflammation of the joints. And that is called gout.
Runner's knee
With a runner's knee, you experience pain on the outside of your knee. It occurs mainly when you are exercising. The pain originates in the tendon. This runs along the side of your thigh and is attached to the lower leg just below the knee. When you exercise you feel a kind of burning and stabbing pain. In some cases the knee becomes swollen. If you stop exercising, the pain subsides.
How can you alleviate knee pain when climbing stairs?
There are a number of things you can do to reduce the pain of climbing stairs.
Stretch your muscles
Stretching the muscles that run over the knee's capsule will reduce tension and allow the knee to function optimally. Be sure to stretch the back, front, inside and outside of the knee for best results.
Strengthen your muscles
Strengthening your muscles will help you get up and down the stairs more easily. There are several exercises that are perfect for this. For example, there is an exercise that you can do even while sitting down. Sit on the floor and hold your leg extended to 30 centimetres above the ground. Lower your leg to just above the ground and then raise it again. Repeat this for about 4 to 5 minutes at a time.
